Prospective UMBC Graduate Students
Prospective graduate students interested in joining the Alicea Lab must first apply to the M.S. or Ph.D. graduate program in the Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC.
Prospective UMBC Undergraduate Students
The Alicea Lab is currently recruiting undergraduate research assistants!
We welcome inquiries from motivated UMBC undergraduate students who are interested in gaining hands-on research experience and can commit to at least two semesters in the lab.
During the first semester, students will focus on developing a strong foundation in essential laboratory practices, including organization, record keeping, and responsible research conduct. Students who successfully complete this initial training period and demonstrate consistency, responsibility, and reliability will have the opportunity to become involved in ongoing research projects in the lab.
Students are expected to attend ( if possible) and actively participate in weekly lab meetings as part of their research experience. Lab meetings provide an opportunity to learn about ongoing projects, discuss scientific literature and experimental results, and engage with other members of the lab.
At UMBC, undergraduate research may be conducted for academic credit or on a volunteer basis. Students interested in receiving academic credit should consult with their academic advisor to determine the appropriate number of research credits.
If you are interested in joining the Alicea Lab, please include the following in your email:
- A brief description of your interests in biology and why you are interested in joining the Alicea Lab
- Your current year in college
- An unofficial transcript
- A brief description of any relevant experience, including laboratory research, working with animals, data organization, or data analysis
- The total number of hours per week you can consistently commit to the lab
- Your weekly availability, broken down by day and time (e.g., Monday 1–5 PM, Tuesday unavailable, Wednesday 9 AM–1 PM, etc.)
Prior research experience is welcome but not required. We are especially interested in students who are curious, dependable, eager to learn, and able to make a consistent commitment to the lab.
